Eye Miniatures

Eye miniatures were in fashion for just a brief moment, in the 18th century. They were an incredibly sentimental art form which could also be worn as fashionable jewelry items. What was so appealing about them was the symbolism behind them, and subtlety as a token of love.

The eye miniature could be commissioned and worn for a number of reasons, such as a love token or the remembrance of deceased loved one. Depending on the gaze of the eye or additions such as the jeweled decorations or a lock of hair, as well as the depiction of tears, clues such as these provided some context as to the subject of the miniature.
